Our method

How we score — and what we deliberately don't do

Our whole value is that you can trust the verdict. So here's the method in full, including its limits. If we ever can't stand behind a number, we don't publish it.

What we don't do: we do not run a hands-on testing lab, and we never pretend to. We don't stitch every machine ourselves, and you won't find staged "test bench" photos or invented reviewer profiles here. Our edge isn't a lab — it's reading everything, honestly.

The four sub-scores

Every machine gets four sub-scores out of 10, which combine into the headline verdict:

  • Ease — setup, threading, hooping and everyday use, weighted toward what beginners actually struggle with.
  • Capability — field size, needle count, speed and what the machine can physically make.
  • Reliability — owner-reported longevity, failure patterns and how the machine holds up over years and high stitch counts.
  • Value — capability and reliability relative to current real-world price.

Where the inputs come from

01 · Specs collected
Manufacturer sheets, manuals, dealer listings.
02 · Owners mined
Reddit, forums, groups — cited, never invented.
03 · Prices tracked
Major retailers, checked monthly.
04 · Verdict scored
Four sub-scores, one stamp. No sponsors.

Specs come from manufacturer sheets, manuals and dealer listings — verified against the maker's own product page. Owner sentiment comes from reading the actual communities where these machines are discussed (Reddit, quilting forums, Facebook groups), which we cite so you can read them yourself. Prices are tracked across major retailers and dated on every page — when you see "checked 3 Jul 2026", that's the day we looked.

The score colour ramp

Every score is colour-coded so you can read it at a glance:

  • 8.0–10 (green) — excellent; we'd recommend it without hesitation for its category.
  • 6.0–7.9 (amber) — good, with real trade-offs worth understanding before buying.
  • Below 6 (red) — mixed; there's usually a better option at a similar price.

No sponsored verdicts

Brands cannot pay to be reviewed, to score higher, or to be recommended. We earn money through affiliate links when you buy through a retailer — explained in full on how we make money — and that commission is identical regardless of which machine we recommend, so it can't bias the verdict. If we get something wrong, we fix it and note it on our corrections page.
